Disability Resource Group
Here are some of the projects we are currently involved in:
ADA Technical Assistance
DRG is an affiliate of the Southeast DBTAC centers. We provide technical assistance to employers, employees, government officials and many others who need to understand more about the ADA. Read more about who we've helped in 2007-2008 here.
Emergency Preparedness for All Project:
This project will bring together disability organizations, people with disabilities, first emergency responders, and emergency planners to write plans that will improve the likelihood of safety of people with disabilities during disasters along the coast of Georgia. Additionally people with disabilities will receive training and written information on “what to do in an emergency.” Emergency planners and responders will receive training by people with disabilities on disability issues which must be considered as a part of emergency preparation. The result of this project is concrete information and processes, which may be used by geographic areas.

Healthcare Improvement for Women with Disabilities:
With the help of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, the Disability Resource Group has created an educational outreach project designed to increase breast cancer screening among women with disabilities in the Atlanta area. By building a pyramid-like structure of peer support groups in six Atlanta disability communities over the period of one year, the Disability Resource Group will reach 600 women with disabilities. Out of the 600 women, approximately 150 will get mammograms in 2007-2008. This will succeed in preventing breast cancer in 25% of this population, which is in keeping with the mission of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. To learn more about this program, read this article from our Summer 2008 Newsletter.
Hispanic Outreach:
Through continued support from the United Way foundation, the Disability Resource group is working to help people with Disabilities and their families in the Hispanic/Latino community of Metro Atlanta to understand the concept of self-determination. This project seeks to explain the concept of self determination-choices for work, living arrangements, and leisure activities- to individuals and families in the Hispanic/Latino community using methods and contacts provided by several well connected Hispanic/Latino leaders.
Immigrant and Refugee Outreach:
With funding from Fulton County and United Way, the Disability Resource Group is conducting an Outreach Project to recent immigrants and refugees in the Atlanta area. We want to make these newcomers and the organizations that support them aware of the many opportunities available to those among them with disabilities. We also want them to be aware of the laws that protect the rights of people with disabilities in our country.
